our aproach for Accessible Sailing on Provident

“A disability can appear to tie you up, to bind you to a life of disappointments.

Time at sea, for some, can help us undo some of the bindings. After all, life on board has challenges for all of us, and in friendship we can find ways to get things done.

Some of us cannot walk as others can, or process thoughts the same way, or see or hear as others do. So in everyday life we can find barriers everywhere.

Out on the rolling waves, with good food in our bellies and the wind in our hair some of those barriers can crumble!

Provident has a proud history of making sailing experiences open to everyone. It could be argued that without this work it may have been hard to justify the expense and effort needed to keep the old boat going. We want to carry on this work. Our longer term goal is to provide paid for places on sailing trips for all sorts of people. Individuals or groups that may sometimes feel that for money or mobility reasons they are disbarred from experiencing and enjoying the benefits of sailing.

Ther’s no getting away from it, sailing and even being on a boat can be quite physically demanding. We will sometimes be defeated, but our approach will always be to try to figure out how this may work. We’ve added lotsa of hand holds all around the boat which are pretty useful for everyone and our forward cabin is really quite spacious so may be more useable by people who need a bit more room or some help. This cabin is right beside the loo too.

If you think you have challenges that might prevent you from sailing, please talk to us. We may well be able to provide you with the kind of support you need in order to sail with us.
