the big sailing adventure - st Kilda or wherever the wind and tides take us
Provident at the St Kilda stacks
On this adventure we’ll travel far off shore and complete night passages. Our voyage will take us anywhere from Rathlin to the northern tip of Lewis to the far North West coast and Sandwood bay or the Assynt peninsula. With 10 days in hand there’s a chance that the elements will align and we’ll get to travel to our number one target, St Kilda.

Above all else this trip will be an adventure.
Our destinations uncertain. But we’ll be traveling through what many of the worlds most experienced sailors regard as simply the best sailing ground on the planet.
With ten days to play with we can take our time and travel far.
Heading out from Oban we’ll check the weather and hatch our plan. Our first choice for this voyage will be sailing to St Kilda but we’ll also think about heading south, maybe as far as Donegal or north around the northern tip of Lewis. Other highlights could be Tory Island, Mingulay, the Monach Isles or the Shiant Islands.
On the way there and back we’ll stop at some favourite ports and anchorages to stock up on lovely local food and drink. For those that want to learn new skills or get more practice, a trip this length gives the best chance to develop your sail handling and navigation. Even complete beginners will be confidently hoisting, tacking and gybing.
We are very likely to try some passage making. This is where we split into watches and take turns running the ship as we sail around the clock. If you’ve never tried this before you have a fantastic treat in store. Very few experiences available to non-astronauts offer such a unique perspective of our tiny place in the universe.
This adventure is for you if you…
Want to explore the furthest flung treasures of the western isles.
Want to sail far out to sea.
Are interested to find out more about sailing and want to get involved with making the ship go.
Would enjoy a trip that’s long enough to allow plenty of time for exploring ashore.
Would like to try passage sailing, where the crew split into watches and sail right through the night.
Are excited about being on a classic sailing ship - no experience necessary just a willingness to have a go!
Don’t mind the occasional damp (wet?) weather and some force 5/6 sailing.
Like some comfort as part of your adventure - the opportunity to get warm and dry quickly after a cold and wet watch.
Would like to round off a day in the breeze with good company, a great meal and maybe a wee dram.
