Provident Sailing Charitable Trust
Provident is a historic Brixham Sailing Trawler, a large and stable 100 year old gaff ketch, rigged and sailed as she was originally intended. She has served as a sail training vessel in the past and we hope she will do again in the future
She has recently been modernised below decks. With an upgraded galley, 8 comfortable guest berths and central heating.
Morag and Steve now own and sail her amongst the islands of the Scottish West Coast.
We are making her history and heritage visible
Provident resonates with stories. Some are buried deep in her bones, of fish and fishermen, of war and weariness. Others, more recent, are from her very many years as a sail training vessel. Those are of youth, friendship, adventure, and of self-discovery.
We are collecting, and using, her 100 years of stories.
Her skipper says “On every voyage stories are made, and stories are told!”
We are making sailing on Provident accessible.
We believe that everyone can derive brilliant mental and physical health benefits from sailing on Provident regardless of the challenges we face in everyday life.
We will work with other charities, and with schools, to create for them the adventures that best suits!
Our Chairman says:
“A disability can appear to tie you up, to bind you to a life of disappointments. Time at sea, for some, can help us undo some of the bindings. After all, life on board has challenges for all of us, and in friendship we can find ways to get things done. Some of us cannot walk as others can, or process thoughts the same way, or see or hear as others do. So in everyday life we can find barriers everywhere. Out on the rolling waves, with good food in our bellies and the wind in our hair some of those barriers can crumble!”

Our Trustees
Our trustees have had professional careers in psychology, youth work, education and marine engineering, and a lived experience of sailing with a disability.
You should find people with an understanding and commitment to make it possible for everyone to experience the joys of this wonderful vessel, be it on the high seas or in port.
