Provident by Amy Smith

This video by our crewmate and new friend Amy Smith is a real treat. She has captured our journey perfectly. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

In July Provident was finally ready to leave Cornwall. We had rounded up a mixture of Cornish and Scottish crew – eleven of us in total with a plan to go non-stop til we crossed the border – somewhere in the North Passage.   Everyone was in good spirits – watches were allocated and Shona our cook had planned the menus, stowed the stores and hidden the caramel wafers in various nooks so that they wouldn’t get eaten all at once!

The trip was pretty easy, not too much wind, lots of sun. We were trying our best to stick to our low carbon philosophy so on some watches the aim was to make sure we didn’t go backwards.    We soon got into a four-hour watch system and the days went by in a haze of night wakening and afternoon sleeps.  The island of Ghiga was our first landfall and our first taste of Scottish whisky and beer.  The next morning, we whooshed through the Sound of Islay, past the distilleries at Caol Ila and Bunnahabhain, going 8 knots with a following tide and a light breeze on the beam – no time to stop then!  We finished with the sound of Kerrera and a sail past Oban.  Thanks to all of those who saw us and sent pictures.    We’re glad to be home and introducing Provi to her new life.

Thanks to everyone who came with us – you made up a fabulous crew.
