Exploring under sail. a Hebridean islands odyssey…

Oban is a great place to spring off from.  Easy to get to by road or rail and right at the heart of a coastline rich in beauty.

On this trip we’ll be heading for islands.  Which ones will depend on the wind and tides and of course where our curiosity takes us.

With over three thousand islands to choose from we’re bound to find ourselves somewhere amazing and a seven night voyage gives us plenty of time to get the hang of the ropes and to go exploring on shore.

As a skipper I always have a plan.  Sometimes we plan in advance with a particular destination in mind.  Although I have to admit that we can’t always do what we set out for.

On this trip we’ll devise a plan at the last minute.  As always, the dispassionate wind and tides will be the biggest factor.  I’m obsessed with weather and tidal predictions.  Always trying to figure out the best route to create a passage that will deliver the best sailing, most delightful anchorages and in some ways to create a kind of story.

With the freedom top go wherever suits us we can have a chat together and define our priorities.  This could be getting to know the ropes,  There’s loads of string to pull on Provident and it’s really satisfying to start to get to know what line does which task.

I’m a qualified sailing instructor and the crew and I really love to share our passion and knowledge.

That said…. We’re also quite happy to bash on ourselves if you would rather sit back, relax ad enjoy the view.  We hope you’ll do a bit of both.  And of course we’ll be looking for great places to stop and explore.

The islands accessible to us on this trip range from Jura and Islay in the south.  Colonsay, Iona and Mull, all great places to explore ashore.  This could be exploring on remote beaches, scaling hills or mountains, finding out about the amazing history of island life or enjoying local food, drinks and culture.

If the elements align its perfectly possible we may cross the Minch and head for the far away outer Hebrides.

The Isla of Barra is a firm favourite of ours.  It’s a beautiful friendly island,  a great place for a wander.  The beaches on the west coast are the most stunning stretches of gold, where hours can be peacefully spent watching Atlantic rollers swoosh across the sand.

Heading back east we could home in on the Small Isles.  This island group of Canna, Rum, Eigg and Muck offers everything from rugged mountains to the finest seafood, even delicious locally brewed beer.

The south Coast of Sky will be in reach too.  Maybe a wander ashore around the otherworldly Lock Coruisk or one of my favourites, the remains of a Viking shipyard by Lock Brittle.

The choices are astonishing and almost endless.
