Provident is 100 years old. We would love to keep her sailing well into another century. Just like any boat Provi needs constant maintenance. There is a continuous process of scraping, painting, oiling, scrubbing, sail mending and system tweaking. The work never ends and is tended to throughout the sailing season and more intensively in the winter.
This work keeps Provi looking smart and all the rigging and tech working properly. The charter fees from our wonderful guests keep this all spinning nicely. But a centenarian like Provi really needs another, deeper level of care and this is where Provi needs a little help from her friends.
Tasks like these listed below are not very glamorous. They’re hard work, time consuming and can be very expensive. But, by tending to these things we can slow the march of time and push the next major structural rebuild into the distant future.
By signing up to a monthly direct debit of £5 you can become a Friend of Provi. As soon as 100 friends have signed up we’ll hold a draw and one lucky friend will win a voucher that can be redeemed against a fantastic sailing holiday aboard this magnificent old boat. We will then hold a new draw every 12 months.

important THInGS THAT WE NEED TO LOOK AFTER…
-
This will keep damaging rain water out. We have made a start on this but need to carry on and at some point some stanchions will need to be replaced.
-
This will be important to ensure that no rotten ends get into the structure of the boat.
-
This could range from a small repair (in 2024 we repaired a crack in the main gaff) but it could be any thousands of pounds to replace one of the spars.
-
The mast step shows some signs of deterioration. The deck leak that may had been causing some damage was repaired in 2024 but it will be important to monitor for ongoing signs of wear.
-
When we took PROVI on, we completely stripped back the hull. There are planks from a variety of timbers including around 20% of the planking which is elm, this is the type of timber originally used. We would like to hold onto these as long as we can but in the end they will need to be replaced.
-
This needs to be constantly monitored and worn parts repaired and replaced.
-
These are constantly under review and will be renewed as required.
